Arriving at Berlin Brandenburg Airport late at night changes the transport decision. During the day, travellers can choose between frequent regional trains, S-Bahn services, buses, taxis, ride-hailing and private transfers. After midnight, some services continue while others operate less frequently, and the final connection from a central station to your hotel may be more complicated than the airport journey itself.
For international visitors, the safest plan is to check the complete door-to-door route before flying rather than assuming that “Berlin has 24-hour public transport everywhere”.
Public transport still works, but check the whole journey
BER is connected to Berlin by regional rail and S-Bahn services. The FEX and other airport connections operate for long daily periods, and parts of Berlin’s public transport network continue overnight.
However, the schedule you see at 3 p.m. is not necessarily the schedule you will have at 1:30 a.m. Frequency can be lower, construction work can affect services and the local U-Bahn or bus near your hotel may no longer operate at the same interval.
This means you should check not only “BER to Hauptbahnhof” but “BER to my exact hotel address”.
If the last part of the journey requires a bus that runs every hour at night, the total travel time may become much longer.
The FEX and airport rail station
The airport railway station is under Terminal 1 on level U2. Travellers arriving at Terminal 2 follow the signs toward Terminal 1 and the railway station.
As of September 2026, the Airport Express FEX provides a very fast connection to central stations, with approximately 23 minutes between BER and Berlin Hauptbahnhof during normal service.
Late at night, always check live departure information before leaving the arrivals area.
Taxi after midnight
Official licensed taxis are available from the designated ranks north and south of Terminal 1 on arrivals level E0.
A taxi is straightforward after a late flight because it goes directly to the hotel. There is no need to work out night-bus connections or carry bags through an unfamiliar station.
BER Airport specifically advises passengers to use the official taxi ranks and avoid unofficial offers outside the designated taxi areas.
Terminal 2 has no separate taxi forecourt, so T2 passengers use the taxi facilities associated with Terminal 1.
Pre-booked private transfer
If your flight is scheduled to land late, a pre-booked transfer can remove one of the biggest uncertainties from the trip.

That does not mean every type of disruption is automatic. If you miss a connection and are moved to a completely different flight number, inform the transfer provider as soon as the new arrival is known.
Likewise, if your aircraft lands but your suitcase is missing and you spend a long time at the baggage service desk, contact the driver or support.
Families arriving late
Children are often exhausted after a late flight. A public transport journey that would be easy at midday can feel much harder at 1 a.m. when a child is sleeping and the family has a stroller and several bags.
If you pre-book a private transfer, select any required infant carrier, child seat or booster during the booking process where available.
Children count as passengers, and the stroller should be included when estimating luggage space.
Solo travellers
Solo visitors may prefer the train because it is economical and Berlin’s public transport network is extensive. If you are unfamiliar with the city, save your hotel route and station exits before the flight.
Keep your phone charged and download an offline map. Berlin stations can have several exits, and choosing the correct one can save a long walk late at night.
Is Berlin safe to travel through at night?
Berlin is a major international city, and large transport hubs remain active late into the night. As in any large city, use normal travel precautions.
Keep your passport, wallet and phone secure. Stay in well-lit official transport areas. Do not accept unsolicited car rides from strangers at the airport.
If you are tired or uncomfortable navigating at night, a direct licensed taxi or pre-booked transfer may be worth the additional cost.
Hotel reception hours matter too
Some small hotels, apartments and guesthouses do not have a 24-hour reception desk. If you expect to arrive after midnight, tell the property in advance and confirm how you will collect a key.
A perfectly organised airport transfer does not help if you arrive at the accommodation and cannot enter.

Save three things offline: your hotel address, your transport plan and any transfer booking information.
If using public transport, check the planned route again after landing because schedules can change. If using a private transfer, keep the meeting point and driver contact available.
