About BER to Museum Island
Museum Island at the northern tip of the Spree island is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with five museums. Berlin Cathedral and the Lustgarten lie at its southern end, and the Humboldt Forum faces them across the street in the rebuilt palace.
Where taxis drop off on Museum Island
There is no driveway to the museum doors. Two edges work best. On the west bank, Am Kupfergraben faces the James-Simon-Galerie, the central entrance for the Neues Museum and the Pergamonmuseum; you cross the canal on a short footbridge to Bodestraße. On the south side, the wide Karl-Liebknecht-Straße between the Lustgarten and the Humboldt Forum is the place for the Altes Museum, the cathedral and the palace. Tell the driver which museum you want, not just "Museumsinsel".
Berlin Cathedral and the Lustgarten
The Berlin Cathedral stands on the east side of the Lustgarten, the green square in front of the Altes Museum. The main entrance faces the lawn. A drop-off on Karl-Liebknecht-Straße, just before the bridge towards Alexanderplatz, leaves you a two-minute walk. The climb to the dome gallery involves many steps, so plan it after you have left your luggage somewhere. Services and concerts can change opening times at short notice.
Humboldt Forum on Schlossplatz
The Humboldt Forum fills the rebuilt palace opposite the Lustgarten. It has portals on several sides and an open courtyard through the middle. Cars stop either on Unter den Linden/Karl-Liebknecht-Straße on the north side or on Schlossplatz to the south. Coming from the Brandenburg Gate or heading on to Alexanderplatz, both are short hops.
Which museum sits on which edge?
- Altes Museum – behind the Lustgarten colonnade, best reached from Karl-Liebknecht-Straße.
- Neues Museum, Alte Nationalgalerie – along Bodestraße, entered via the James-Simon-Galerie or the colonnade courtyard.
- Bode-Museum – at the northern tip; ask for the end of Am Kupfergraben or Monbijoustraße on the other side, which also suits trips to the Hackesche Höfe.
Museums with suitcases: plan a stop first
Museums on the island only accept small bags and the cloakrooms are not designed for suitcases. If your flight lands in the morning, go to the hotel first or read our tips on arriving before check-in. The Pergamonmuseum is closed for several years of renovation, so check its status before planning a visit.
How long does the taxi take from BER?
About 25 to 30 km. Without traffic, 35 to 50 minutes; in weekday rush hour, around an hour. Drivers often approach via Jannowitzbrücke or through Kreuzberg and Leipziger Straße, depending on roadworks. Unlike the metered cabs at the BER rank, a booking states one amount for the vehicle, which is handy when several museum-goers share the ride and split the cost.

What to tell the driver
- Museum or building name plus the side: Am Kupfergraben, Lustgarten or Schlossplatz.
- Your flight number, so pickup adapts to delays.
- Wheelchair or pram? Mention it, and the driver picks the flattest kerb.
- More hotels nearby: hotels in Mitte.
