About BER to Hackesche Höfe
The Hackesche Höfe are a group of eight connected courtyards in the Spandauer Vorstadt, known for their decorated Art Nouveau facades, small shops, cinemas and cafés. Hackescher Markt with its S-Bahn station lies directly in front of them.
Rosenthaler Straße: tram tracks and no lay-by
The main gate of the Hackesche Höfe opens onto Rosenthaler Straße. The street is narrow, carries tram tracks and has one lane in each direction. A car that stops here blocks the tram, so drivers only pull over briefly where it is allowed. Often the better choice is the square in front of the S-Bahn station or a side street such as Sophienstraße, where the courtyards have a second exit.
Eight courtyards, two exits
The complex links eight courtyards, from the tiled first court near the main gate to quieter residential courts at the back. You can walk through and leave on Sophienstraße, which is calmer for a pickup or drop-off. Next door, the courtyard of Haus Schwarzenberg with its street art, the Anne Frank Zentrum and the Otto Weidt workshop museum share the same stretch of Rosenthaler Straße.
Hackescher Markt: market days and evenings
The square by the station hosts a weekly market, usually on Thursdays and Saturdays. On those days, stalls take space near the station and delivery vans add to the traffic. Friday and Saturday nights bring crowds from the bars and restaurants. Late arrivals can read the tips for getting into Berlin after midnight.
How long is the ride from BER?
The distance is about 26 to 30 km. At quiet times, 40 to 50 minutes are typical; when commuters fill the roads, closer to sixty. Drivers usually approach via Jannowitzbrücke and Alexanderplatz, then follow the tram route. Tram streets mean many traffic lights, and a meter ticks at each of them. Your booking shows the full amount for the car up front.
Hotels and apartments around the Höfe
Many visitors stay in apartments in the side streets of the Spandauer Vorstadt or in hotels near the station. With so many small lanes, write the house name or a clear landmark in the booking comment. A list of options is on the page hotels at Alexanderplatz and Hackescher Markt. If your apartment lies further north, the Prenzlauer Berg page may fit better.
Within a few minutes on foot
The Höfe are a good base for exploring on foot. Oranienburger Straße with the golden dome of the New Synagogue is around the corner, the Sophienkirche hides behind the courtyards, and Monbijoupark leads down to the Spree. On the other bank, Museum Island begins with the Bode-Museum. Once your luggage is at the hotel, you rarely need a car again in this part of Mitte.
