About Berlinale film festival
The Berlinale is one of the world's major film festivals, held every February with a competition, many sections and a large audience programme. Most premieres take place at Potsdamer Platz, while screenings spread across cinemas in several districts.
Where the festival screens
Potsdamer Platz is the heart of the festival, but films run in cinemas across the city. Venues used in recent editions include:
- Berlinale Palast – the theatre on Marlene-Dietrich-Platz, where the competition premieres and the red carpet take place.
- Zoo Palast – the restored premiere cinema in City West, by Zoo station.
- Uber Eats Music Hall – in Friedrichshain, next to the Uber Arena.
- Friedrichstadt-Palast, Urania, Delphi Filmpalast on Kantstraße and the Akademie der Künste on Hanseatenweg.
Check the venue on each ticket: two screenings on one day can be half an hour apart by car.
How long does the taxi take from BER?
To Potsdamer Platz plan around 35–50 minutes, to Zoo Palast and Kantstraße 40–55, to Friedrichshain 30–45. February brings dark afternoons, rain or snow and slower traffic in the weekday rush between about 4 and 7 pm. If you have a screening that evening, a flight landing by early afternoon keeps you on the safe side.
The taxi rank or a pre-booked car?
When several flights land at once, the queue at the BER taxi rank can be long, and in winter it stands outside. The meter charges by distance and waiting time under the regulated tariff, so a slow drive costs more. With a booking you see the total for the vehicle in advance, the driver waits in arrivals with your flight number, and the boot takes suitcases plus a garment bag for the premiere outfit.
Arriving at Potsdamer Platz during the festival
Around the Berlinale Palast, barriers, security checks and crowds of fans shape the evening, particularly on gala nights. Cars cannot pull up at the red carpet unless you are an official guest with accreditation for the car. Ask your driver to stop in a side street near the square and walk the last few minutes. Hotels within walking distance are listed on hotels at Potsdamer Platz & Tiergarten; for City West see hotels on Ku'damm.
Industry guests and the film market
Producers, buyers and press often combine screenings with the European Film Market and meetings. If your company needs an invoice or several drivers on the same day, the business transfer page explains the options. Give the company name and cost centre in the booking notes.

Practical checklist for festival days
- Tickets usually go on sale online a few days before each screening; check them before booking your drive.
- Keep your phone charged: the driver may call when the arrivals hall is busy.
- Leave suitcases at the hotel, as cinemas have little space for them.
- Switching from Potsdamer Platz to Friedrichshain or City West on the same evening? Allow 20–30 minutes for that drive; ordinary Berlin taxis wait at ranks near the larger cinemas.
- Book the ride back to BER early, see Berlin to BER; the closing weekend sees many departures.
