Its own old town at the western edge
Spandau was an independent town until 1920 and still feels like one, with a coherent old town, the citadel on the Havel and its own centre around Berlin-Spandau station. Add to that Siemensstadt, the Wasserstadt and, further out, Gatow and Kladow by the water, some of which are reached only via longer approach roads. Several kilometres separate the old town from the outer districts, so the exact address matters here more than most.
The longest route inside the city
Spandau sits at the far west, BER in the south-east: that is the longest connection within Berlin. By public transport it means changing, and depending on the destination a further bus leg. On routes like this it weighs that a pre-booked transfer is priced for the vehicle rather than per person: for families or small groups that changes the comparison with several individual tickets.
