A rental car offers freedom for trips beyond Berlin. For a city-only stay, it can add parking costs and work. The choices already differ at BER: with a rental you drive yourself; with a taxi or transfer someone else handles the road journey.
Collecting a rental car at BER
Rental counters are in Terminal 1 near Arrivals 2 on level E0. BER says the cars are in nearby parking garage P2. Bring the documents your provider requires and allow time for the contract, vehicle check and walk. For a late arrival, verify opening times and out-of-hours procedures with the rental company.
Calculate the complete rental cost
Beyond the base rental rate, consider insurance excess, fuel or charging, hotel and city parking, extra drivers and child seats. Ask whether you will actually use the car on most days. A rental standing unused between airport and hotel trips may be expensive.
Taxi or private transfer
Official taxis wait outside T1 on E0. You can go to your address without collecting a vehicle. A prebooked transfer sets the meeting point, vehicle and displayed quote ahead of time. Check the actual trip: booking terms govern a transfer, while the applicable taxi tariff governs an unbooked taxi.
Choose by itinerary
For a central Berlin visit with good public transport and few day trips, individual rides or rail can be simpler than a car for the whole stay. Several destinations outside Berlin may make a rental worthwhile. Compare the total over your full stay and whether you want to drive after landing.
