About BER to Gendarmenmarkt
Gendarmenmarkt in historic Friedrichstadt is framed by the Konzerthaus and the French and German Cathedrals. It hosts summer concerts and one of Berlin's best-known Christmas markets.
Four streets around one square
The square between the Konzerthaus, the French Cathedral and the German Cathedral is closed to traffic. Cars use the streets around it:
- Markgrafenstraße on the west side, one block from Friedrichstraße.
- Charlottenstraße on the east side, with several hotels and restaurants.
- Französische Straße to the north, next to the French Cathedral.
- Mohrenstraße to the south, near the German Cathedral.
Jägerstraße and Taubenstraße meet the square in the middle and are useful when the corners are busy.
Hotels on the square: where the car pulls up
- Hilton Berlin – Mohrenstraße, facing the German Cathedral; details on the Hilton Berlin page.
- Regent Berlin – Charlottenstraße, close to the north-east corner.
- Sofitel Berlin Gendarmenmarkt – Charlottenstraße, a few doors further on.
Other options within walking distance are listed under hotels in Mitte and Gendarmenmarkt.
The square after its renovation
Gendarmenmarkt reopened after an extensive renovation with new paving, better drainage and fixed connections for open-air events. For visitors arriving by car nothing changed: the square stays car-free, but the edges are now clearer and pram or wheelchair users have smoother surfaces from the kerb to the Konzerthaus steps.
Concerts and Christmas market: when it gets tight
In summer, open-air concerts fill the square, and from late November a fenced Christmas market takes over. On those days, delivery vehicles, stages and crowds narrow Markgrafenstraße and Charlottenstraße in the evening. Your driver may stop on Französische Straße or at the corner of Friedrichstraße instead. Concert-goers can find more on theatres, opera and shows.
How long does the ride take from BER?
Expect roughly 24 to 28 km on the road. Outside peak hours, 35 to 45 minutes is typical; on weekday mornings and from late afternoon, plan an hour. One block west, Friedrichstraße carries cars again; its long-term layout is still under debate. Berlin taxi tariffs are set by the authorities and charged by distance and waiting time. A booking replaces that with one figure agreed before departure.
After the concert: the way back to BER
When the Konzerthaus empties, hundreds of people look for a cab at the same moment, and the side streets fill quickly. If you fly out the next morning, book the ride from Berlin to BER in advance and give the hotel as pickup point. For early flights, allow extra time: even at dawn, the A100 can slow down near the Dreieck Neukölln. The driver meets you at the hotel entrance, and the luggage goes straight into the boot.

Quick checklist
- Hotel name plus street, for example "Charlottenstraße".
- Flight number in the booking, so the pickup follows delays.
- Evening concert? Add the start time; the driver plans around closures.
