For 2026, the main Christmas-market season begins in late November, with some winter events opening earlier. If you are flying into BER, winter weather, heavy luggage and early darkness make airport planning more important than during a summer city break.
Which Christmas market is closest to your hotel?
Berlin does not have one single Christmas market.
Visitors may choose the central markets around Gendarmenmarkt, Alexanderplatz and Potsdamer Platz, the market at Charlottenburg Palace or smaller neighbourhood markets.
The best airport transport therefore depends on where you are staying.
A hotel in Mitte has a different route from a hotel near Charlottenburg Palace.

Public transport in winter
The FEX and other rail services provide efficient transport from BER into Berlin.
For visitors staying near Hauptbahnhof, Potsdamer Platz or an S-Bahn connection, the train can be an excellent option.
Remember that BER lies in fare zone C, so travel into central Berlin normally requires an ABC ticket.
Winter weather does not automatically stop Berlin’s transport system, but snow, ice or operational disruption can occasionally affect services.

Taxi or private transfer with winter luggage
Christmas visitors often arrive with more luggage than summer travellers.
Heavy coats, boots and shopping leave less suitcase space, and many visitors return home with gifts.
A taxi or pre-booked transfer is convenient because luggage is loaded once and taken directly to the hotel.
For families or small groups, a minivan may be more practical than several individual vehicles.
Early darkness
In December, Berlin becomes dark in the late afternoon.
For first-time visitors, arriving at an unfamiliar station in the dark with luggage can feel less comfortable than the same journey on a bright summer evening.
That does not make public transport unsafe or impractical, but it changes the experience.

Your airport transfer only needs to get you comfortably to your accommodation.

Opening hours can change significantly around 24, 25 and 26 December.
Markets, shops, restaurants and public transport can follow holiday schedules.
If you arrive on Christmas Eve, confirm hotel reception and restaurant options before travelling.
Do not assume you will be able to walk out and find a late dinner easily.
New Year period
Berlin remains busy through New Year.
Traffic restrictions, celebrations and large crowds can affect city-centre driving.
If you are flying on 31 December or 1 January, plan the airport journey with extra care and check current road and transport information.
A vehicle cannot bypass closed roads, so even a private transfer needs a realistic pickup point and time.
Families in winter
Children need warm clothing accessible during the journey.
Do not pack every hat and glove into checked luggage if you are arriving from a warm country.
If you need a child seat for the transfer, select it during booking where available.
A stroller can also occupy significant luggage space, so state it in advance.
Shopping and the return journey
Christmas-market trips often end with more bags than they started with.
If you buy gifts, ornaments or bulky items, make sure they will fit in your airline baggage and airport vehicle.
