Berlin’s public transport is excellent, but the best airport option changes when luggage becomes the main problem.
A solo traveller with one cabin bag can move easily through the airport station. A family with four suitcases, a stroller and hand luggage experiences the same route very differently.
Before choosing your transport from BER, count the luggage honestly.
The train is possible with luggage
The airport railway station is directly below Terminal 1.
Lifts and escalators make the station accessible, and the FEX provides a fast route to central Berlin.
Normal luggage does not require a separate passenger ticket under standard public transport rules.
For one or two wheeled suitcases, the train can be straightforward.
The difficulty appears when you need to change from the FEX or S-Bahn to an U-Bahn, tram or bus after reaching Berlin.
Station changes are the real challenge
A route planner may show a connection with only one change.
That sounds easy until you have two large cases per person.
Changing levels can involve lifts, escalators and walking along platforms. Busy trains can also make it harder to keep the group and luggage together.
If your hotel is directly beside Hauptbahnhof, Alexanderplatz or another major station, the train remains very practical.
If the hotel is several blocks away or requires another connection, door-to-door transport becomes more attractive.
Regular airport taxi
A licensed taxi allows you to load the luggage once at BER and unload it at the hotel.
For up to a few passengers with standard baggage, this is simple.
The limitation is vehicle size. A normal taxi may not have enough boot space for four large hard-shell suitcases, even if the passengers technically fit.

Sports equipment
Bicycles, golf bags and other sports equipment require special planning.
Berlin itself is not primarily a ski destination, but international visitors may continue elsewhere or carry specialised gear.
A vehicle needs enough physical length and secure storage, not just spare seats.

Arriving at Terminal 2
Terminal 2 passengers use transport infrastructure centred around T1.
With heavy luggage, the walking route between terminals is more noticeable.

Luggage after a long flight
Fatigue makes heavy luggage feel heavier.
After a ten-hour flight, the value of door-to-door travel is not only the driving time. It is avoiding repeated lifting, station changes and finding the hotel entrance from the nearest stop.
For younger backpackers, that may not matter. For older visitors or families, it can matter a lot.
Choose based on the whole trip
If your hotel is beside a direct airport train station, public transport may still be easiest.
If the journey requires two changes and a 700-metre walk, a direct vehicle may save effort.
